The proposition is to create a critical mass of new development underpinned by a major urban food programme, consisting of growing, processing and sale along with related food education. There is a wealth of farming and food production already operating in close proximity to Birkenhead, justifying the creation of this cluster. Additional uses in the proposed plan include significant residential and hotel developments. In urban design terms the project seeks to make the vital connection between the historic Georgian townscape and the Mersey Waterfront, thus bring Birkenhead’s two best physical assets together. To achieve this the project is focused on the waterfront directly north of the Cammell Laird facility, and directly east of the Town Hall on Hamilton Square.
